With Android 13, themed icons were added to third-party apps after making their debut in Android 12. Now that Android 14 is becoming more widely available, Meta is caving in and introducing customized icons for Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger on Android devices.

Android applications with themed icons can display their icon in a color scheme that complements the colors Material You extracts from your background. Due to the relatively limited app support at first, it wasn’t really a helpful feature, but a rising number of applications now support customized icons.

Now, Meta is working harder to support themed icons.

On Android, Instagram was initially observed including a themed icon with app version 307.0.0.0.30, which is presently in Alpha. The primary Facebook app is also gaining support in the meantime; version 439.0.0.0.30 of the app is now in Alpha and supports customized icons.

9to5Google has also confirmed that Facebook Messenger, which is also in the Alpha program, is introducing themed icon support with app version 433.0.0.0.8. It seems to be supported in beta as well.

Facebook distributes Alpha releases through a more exclusive group; unlike regular beta programs, you won’t be able to locate these releases in the Play Store. However, if you utilize a trustworthy source for APKs, you should have no trouble sideloading these versions.

The first Meta applications with themed icons are not these ones. We assume that the recent addition of support in Threads’ stable version is what sparked the development of Meta’s other applications. Either way, it’s wonderful to finally see progress, even though it’s long overdue. We’re not sure when stable updates including these improvements will be available to all users.
